WINONA, Minn. – It was a day to remember for pitcher
Mitchell Stalsberg.
Â
The freshman starter pitched a complete game no-hitter and struck out 17 batters in the Winona State baseball team's 11-0 victory in the second game of a doubleheader against Sioux Falls. Winona State (17-21, 15-11 NSIC) also won the first game 4-0 in another strong pitching performance by the Warriors.
Â
Stalsberg's no-hitter is the first in nearly 10 years for Winona State, with the last one coming on May 7, 2005 when Brandon Hellenbrand pitched a no-no in a 10-0 victory over Minnesota Crookston.
Â
In striking out 17, Stalsberg fanned the fourth-most batters in a single game in Warrior program history. The last time a WSU pitcher struck out more batters came more than 45 years ago, when Sam Shea sent down 18 batters on April 15, 1970. The record for strikeouts in a game is 21, set by Lee Paul in a 10-inning win over Saint Mary's in 1952.
Â
Stalsberg wasn't the only pitcher to put together a remarkable pitching performance on the day as junior pitcher
Lucas Crimmins had a perfect game through five innings of work in the first game, but struggled late in the game and instead combined with Warrior closer
Mitch Voter to get a 4-0 shutout victory.
Â
Winona State opened up the scoring in the first game with a power surge from its freshman outfielder and senior shortstop. In the bottom of the second, left fielder
Mitchell Heid launched a solo blast over the left field fence to give the Warriors the early 1-0 lead.
Â
Winona State added three more in the bottom of the third on another long ball. With runners on first and second and one out,
Tyler Nehring hit a deep line drive to left field that cleared the fence and instantly gave the Warriors the 4-0 lead.
Â
In the top of the fifth, Crimmins made back-to-back outstanding defensive plays to knock down line drives and throw out the runner at first to keep the perfect game in tact.
Â
However, Crimmins perfect game would be snapped in the top of the sixth as USF's Michael Downs laid down a bunt with one out that snuck between Crimmins, Evanson, and
Andrew Geislinger. Crimmins gave up two more hits in the inning, but got out of trouble with a strikeout to end the inning.
Â
In the seventh, Crimmins had a tough time commanding his pitches, giving up a single and walk. WSU catcher
Taylor Field threw out a runner at first base to get an out, but Crimmins walked the next batter to put runners at first and second with one out.
Â
Winona State head coach
Kyle Poock decided to go to his bullpen and bring in
Mitch Voter. After walking the first batter he faced to load the bases, Voter struck out the next two batters to help the Warriors escape with the 4-0 victory.
Â
Crimmins closed out the day with a final stat line of 6 1/3 innings pitched, giving up four hits, two walks with six strikeouts.
Â
Voter picked up the save, pitching 2/3 of an inning, giving up no hits, a walk, and striking out two.
Â
Nehring was WSU's offensive leader, going 2-for-3 on the game with a homer, three RBIs and a run scored. Heid also contributed with a 1-for-3 game with a homer, an RBI and a run scored.
Â
The second game provided the complete package of fantastic pitching by Stalsberg and two solid five-run innings in an 11-0 victory in seven innings.
Â
The first of those five run innings came in the third inning. With runners on first and second with one out, Cazares slapped a single through the left side to score
Andrew Geislinger from second to make the score 1-0. Two batters later, Heid made it 2-0 on a fly ball that dropped into right center field to score
Jordan Plamann from second.
Â
The very next at-bat,
Mitch Voter hit his first career home run on a three-run shot to right field to expand the Warrior lead to 5-0.
Â
Two innings later, the Winona State offense put together the second five-run inning to make it a 10 run lead. Voter started out the slew of scoring with an RBI single through the left side, scoring Heid to make it 6-0. Two batters later,
Michael Hommes dropped a single into center field, scoring Evanson from second to make it 7-0.
Â
The very next at-bat, Geislinger delivered a three-run blast to left-center field to give the Warriors the 10-0 lead.
Â
Winona State added one more insurance run in the sixth inning on a
Kipp Youngquist pinch-hit RBI single to left field, scoring Evanson from third and stretching the lead to 11.
Â
Stalsberg closed out the seventh inning of his career day with a ground out and back-to-back strikeouts to finish off the no-hitter and give the Warriors the 11-0 victory.
Â
In closing out Winona State's 22nd no-hitter in program history, Stalsberg pitched seven innings and only walked three with his 17 strikeouts, while facing just 24 batters in the contest.
Â
Voter led the WSU bats, going 2-for-2 with a home run, four RBIs, two runs scored and drew a walk. Geislinger also had a solid day from the plate, going 1-for-2 with three RBIs, two runs and drew two walks.
Â
With the two wins, the Warriors swept the Cougars on Saturday and took three of the four games in the series.
Â
Winona State will take a break from conference play and will host a nonconference nine-inning game on Thursday against crosstown foe Saint Mary's Thursday night at 6 p.m. at Loughrey Field.
