SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Hanna Lythberg tossed a complete game shutout and the No. 14 Winona State softball team mustered just enough offense to post a 2-0 victory over Minnesota State Friday afternoon in the NSIC/US Bank Tournament.
Lythberg, who improved to 22-7 on the season, was fantastic in the circle, going the distance while scattering just five hits - all singles and all in different innings. The junior did not allow a runner to reach third base in the game while striking out two batters and forcing 16 groundouts.
The Warriors were able to push across a run in the second and third innings to give Lythberg some run support. After McKenna Larsen drew a leadoff walk to start the bottom of the second, she scored from first when Jessica Kullmann drove her in with a double to center field after a nine-pitch at-bat.
In the following inning, a passed ball by Maverick starter Coley Ries with the bases loaded allowed all the runners to advance and Reed Karsten to score to give the Warriors a 2-0 cushion.
That would be all the scoring either team would manage, as the pitchers' duel would allow just five hits from each team in the game.
Karsten finished 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Kullmann had the lone RBI for the Warriors.
Winona State (44-12) will move on in the double-elimination tournament to face top-seeded No. 9 Augustana at 4 p.m. today with the winner automatically advancing to the championship game Saturday at 2 p.m.
