WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State gymnastics team won two events and took second place at its own four-team Brooke Baures "Smile On" Memorial Invitational Friday night in McCown Gymnasium.
The Warriors scored a 184.325 to finish second behind UW-Whitewater's 187.325. UW-Stout took third with a 181.050 and Gustavus finished fourth with a score of 177.500.
Sophomore Katie Pipp won the uneven bars event with a score of 9.625. Senior Brooke Hiestand also claimed an event title, winning the floor exercise with a score of 9.475 to narrowly beat out UW-Stout's Kaylee Jondahl, who scored a 9.450.
WSU had an early lead after the first rotation, posting its best score of the night in the vault. WSU scored a 47.275 in the event, which ties for the fifth-best vault score in program history. The Warriors were led by sophomore Eboni Jackson's 9.650 – which was good for second place in the event and WSU's best score of the night. Alyssa Carroll, Taylor Lewis and Jade Donaldson each added matching 9.500s.
Cassidy Kleven finished third on the balance beam with a 9.600, while Jackson was fourth with a 9.575. Joining Hiestand with solid performances on the floor exercise were Katie Carling – who finished fifth with a 9.350 – and and Jackson, who scored a 9.325.
Jackson also turned in a solid All-Around score, finishing fourth out of nine competitors with a score of 37.150.
Winona State has a quick turnaround as it heads to Gustavus next for a 6 p.m. meet on Tuesday in St. Peter, Minnesota.
