MANKATO, Minn. – Sophomore Kaitlyn Long won her second straight NSIC title in the weight throw and the Winona State track and field team is in second place after Day 1 of the NSIC Track & Field Championships Friday in Mankato.
Long blew away her competition, winning the event by nearly 10 feet, recording a toss of 72' 2 1/2", a new NSIC championship and facility record. The throw topped second place Breann Jackson of Northern State's throw of 62' 8 ¾". The Warriors took third and fourth in the event as well, with senior Abbey Ristow throwing a distance of 56' 6" and Ashley Thooft throwing 55'.
The Distance Medley Relay team of McKenzier Carper, Ali Skluzacek, Katie Bagley and Amanda Kaiser also earned a top five finish, finishing with a time of 12:41.07, the ninth-best mark in program history.
Olivia Fixsen and Maria Wrage each cleared 5' 4 ¼" in the high jump, with Fixsen tying for the sixth best mark in program history.
Winona State competes in the finals of the majority of its events Saturday with Day 2 of the NSIC Championships from Myers Fieldhouse in Mankato.
