SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Nicole Nelson won the hammer throw title Friday to lead the Winona State track and field team on Day 1 of the NSIC Outdoor Championships at a cold and wet Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls.
Nelson won the event with a personal-record toss of 193' 8", a heave that topped her previous best by more than 10 feet and becomes the second-best throw in Winona State history.
Kaitlyn Long made it a one-two finish for the Warriors in the event with a personal record of her own, coming up just a foot shy of Nelson's mark at 192' 8" which is now the third best throw in the program's history. Erin Perkins added a fifth-place finish and Abbey Ristow finished sixth as the Warriors picked up 25 team points in just that event.
The big day in the hammer throw helped the Warriors to second place in the team standings after day one, accumulating 36.5 points. Augustana leads with 59.5 points, while Sioux Falls is third with 33. Minnesota State is close behind in fourth, while Northern State rounds out the top five.
Olivia Fixsen added a fourth-place effort in the high jump, clearing a height of 5' 2 ½".
Jordan Paschke finished fifth in the 10000-meter run with a personal-record time of 37:23.31 to improve her own third-best mark in the WSU record book.
The top three finishers in each event and the top two relay teams are named to the NSIC Outdoor Track & Field All-Conference team.
The NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Championship resumes Saturday morning at 11 a.m. with field events followed by track finals beginning at 1 p.m. Live results can be found here with a live video feed available here.
