BISMARCK, N.D. – Saturday night at U-Mary was the tale of two halves. The Winona State University Warriors came out looking like their early-season selves, playing competitive basketball and shooting at a high rate. However, as the second half began, the Warriors offensive struggles returned and U-Mary charge, handing WSU its sixth straight loss, 81-64.
Shooting 58 percent from the floor in the first half, Winona State went on an 8-to-3 run to jump out front to start Saturday's contest. That lead would diminish in the coming minutes, but Winona State kept themselves in the game, answering U-Mary's offensive push. Midway through the second with Winona State down by 10,
Liz Evenocheck sunk a three-pointer in transition to spark a 16-to-4 run to end the half with Winona State up two points, 40-38.
Kayla Schaefer went 5-of-6 shooting in the first half to help the Warriors gain the halftime lead.
Out of the break, U-Mary found their three-point stroke, going 5-for-8 in from beyond the arc in the quarter to pull ahead of Winona State. Consequently, the Warriors went just 2-for-16 from the field as the Marauders took a 59-46 lead into the final period.
The Warriors made one last effort at a comeback, cutting the 18-point deficit down to eight at with just over three minutes remaining, but the Marauders held them off for the victory.
As was the case Friday night, the Warriors had trouble securing the defensive boards, giving up 11 second-chance points to the Marauders.
Winona State's defense was able to pressure U-Mary into 13 turnovers which the Warriors converted into 13 points.
Hannah McGlone and
Allie Pickrain both ended up with a 14 points apiece while Schaefer rounded out the Warriors in double figures with 13. McGlone collected her 11th of the season, bringing down 10 rebounds to add to her point total.
The Warriors return home and look to use their home court advantage to get back on track as they host MSU-Moorhead Friday February 2nd at 6 p.m.
