Winona State wins seventh straight, topples SMSU

WINONA, Minn. – Winona State University remained undefeated at home this season, racing past Southwest Minnesota State University on Friday night in McCown Gymnasium, 61-46.

Senior Hannah McGlone registered her ninth double-double in the last 11 games as the Warriors improved to 12-1 (8-1 NSIC) overall.

Liz Evenocheck got off to a fast start for WSU, scoring all nine of her first half points in the opening quarter to give the Warriors a 19-15 edge after 10 minutes of action. The junior went 3-of-4 from beyond the arc in the first quarter, sparking Winona to a 5-for-10 effort in the first half of play.

The Warriors opened up a 37-22 lead at halftime with Madison Worke coming off the bench to add six points on a pair of three-pointers. Winona's stifling defense limited the Mustangs to just seven points in the second quarter of action.

After dominating the second quarter, the Warriors came out of the break on a six-point run to claim a 43-22 lead early in the third quarter. McGlone paced the home team with six points of her own in the third quarter.

WSU led by as many as 23 points early in the fourth quarter, before some sloppy play and a five-minute scoring drought opened the door for the Mustangs to make a desperation run late. SMSU cut its deficit to 14 points midway through the final quarter before the Warriors again stepped on the gas pedal to close out yet another double-digit victory.

Evenocheck and Rachel Novotny scored 16 points apiece for Winona. Novotny came up one rebound shy of her second straight double-double. McGlone led all players with 15 rebounds to go along with 12 points.

Allie Pickrain returned to action for WSU and scored three points off the bench in her first game in nearly a month.

The Warriors look to avenge their only loss of the season on Saturday against Sioux Falls. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Winona.
