Warriors' skid continues after hard-fought loss to Northern State

WINONA, Minn. – Despite one of its best shooting performances in recent weeks, Winona State University was on the wrong end of a 70-63 decision against Northern State University on Saturday evening in McCown Gymnasium.

The setback is the Warriors' eighth straight loss which has come on the heels of an eight-game winning streak.

Saturday matchup picked up where Friday night's historic game left off. The Warriors and Wolves played a tightly contested first half, trading baskets and the lead throughout the first quarter. Northern State stretched its lead to nine-point in the second before an eight-point run capped with back-to-back threes by Gabie Doud and Julia Silloway made it a 23-21 contest.

A three-pointer by Alyssa Jurges before the buzzer sounded kept it at a two-point gap with Northern taking a 34-32 edge into halftime.

Winona State's first half success was aided by 11 Wolves' turnovers that the Warriors converted into 14 points.

Hannah McGlone opened the scoring in the second half for the Warriors and tied the game up at 34. Northern State would then go on a 13-2 run over the next four minutes to build its largest lead of the game (11).

Kayla Schaefer and Allie Pickrain combined to score 14 points over the final four minutes of the third quarter as part of a 14-2 WSU run. Pickrain hit three consecutive three-pointers during that stretch as the Warriors took a 50-49 lead into the final quarter.

Northern State took the lead for good at the 8:28 mark of the fourth quarter. The Warrior continued to battle and kept the deficit at just one possession until the final minutes as the Wolves held on for the road victory.

The Warriors shot 47 percent from the field and 45 percent from beyond the arc tonight.

Pickrain led the Warriors in the scorning column tonight with 14, while McGlone followed close behind with 13. Schaefer and Gabie Doud also chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Winona State falls to 13-9 (9-9 NSIC) with Saturday's setback while Northern improves to 20-4 (15-3 NSIC).

McGlone is closing in on 1,000 career points, needing just 19 to reach the milestone as the Warriors hit the road for a pair of games next weekend.

Winona State owns wins already this season over both its road opponents next week – Concordia and Mankato.
